Habitus investigation: Applicants entering the doctoral training programme by applying for the complex exam
It is possible to apply for the doctoral training programme through individual preparation. In this case, the student status is established by
1) passing the complex exam and
2) enrolling in person.
The following conditions must be met
The applicant
- must have received his/her MA diploma at least five years prior to the application
- must meet the criteria set for regular applicants
- must have shown sufficient expertise based on his/her previous work that he/she qualifies for the complex exam (i.e. can obtain the sufficient number of credits during the habitus investigation to be admitted to the complex exam)
Forms and documents to be submitted for the application
- Application form to the complex exam
- Supervisor’s declaration about the eligibility for the complex exam
- Research plan
- Reference work
- Copy of the Master’s degree. If the degree is not in English or Hungarian, its official translation is also required (in English or in Hungarian)
- Professional CV
- Copy of language certificate(s). Proof of English language competence is required in C1 level, both on writing and speaking component
- Documents attesting to prior professional and academic activity:
- Official, authenticated transcript of records and course descriptions of previously completed courses
- Authenticated documentation of previously completed teaching activity, and the course descriptions of the classes taught
- List of publications registered in MTMT. When applying to the Doctoral School of Education you are required to have at least one scientific publication.
- Written summary of the applicant’s professional work, academic achievements and other relevant activities. Authentic documentation is required for all the cited activities.
- Copy of the proof of payment (of the following fees: 1. application fee, 2. fee of habitus investigation, 3. fee of complex exam)

Fees to be paid
The overall fee is 1065 EUR which is comprised of the following items:
- application for the habitus investigation: 280 EUR
- application for the complex exam: 225 EUR
- organizing the complex exam: 560 EUR
Payment is possible via the ELTE Online Payment Platform.
To start the procedure, the applicant must read and accept the Privacy Policies. In the menu “Selecting items”, you must add the items to your cart one by one. You must select the Faculty of Education and Psychology for all items when selecting “Faculty (organizational unit).” In case of the first items, the “Payment title” is fee of habitus investigation, and the “Subtitle” is foreign. When adding the second item to your cart, the “Payment title” is complex exam and the “Subtitle” is application fee (foreign). When adding the third item, you have to select complex exam again as the “Payment title”, but this time, the “Subtitle” is Procedure fee (foreign). It is important to add each item to the cart individually. After adding all three items, the sum should be 1065 EUR, and you may click “Next”. Make sure that you provide the billing data accurately so that we can identify your payment. You will have one more opportunity to double-check your items and payment details on the “Overview” site. If everything is correct, click “Pay.” You will be redirected to a third party payment provider (OTP Simple Pay), and you can select various options for the payment.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
When is it possible to submit an application?
Application is continuous, but if you apply for a complex exam in the spring semester, you have to apply until 1 March. When applying for the fall semester, you have to apply until 1 October.
Which financial forms are available?

Who should apply to the programme this way?
Applicants who have already passed their complex exam but have not yet received their absolutorium, or even if they have received their absolutorium but did not submit their dissertation until the deadline.
What is the habitus investigation?
During the habitus investigation, the Doctoral School evaluates the applicant’s prior academic record. The goal of the evaluation is to determine whether the applicant fulfils the requirements for being eligible to start the doctoral programme and take the complex exam.
If the habitus investigation concludes that the applicant is not eligible to sit for the complex exam, the application to the programme shall be rejected.

What happens after passing the complex exam?
After passing the complex exam, the Faculty Doctoral Council makes a decision about the application’s acceptance to the doctoral programme. The Letter of Acceptance is prepared and sent by the Registrar’s Office. The student status is established by personal enrolment. The Registrar’s Office registers the credits accepted during the habitus investigation. If enough credits were accepted to obtain the absolutorium, the Registrar’s Office issues the absolutorium. In this case, no active student status is required.
If the habitus investigation prescribes the obtainment of more research or teaching credits, the student must obtain these credits in order to receive the absolutorium. In this case, the student must establish an active student status, which entails a payment liability for each semester with an active student status.
What happens during the personal enrolment?
For the personal enrolment, please contact the Registrar’s Office for an appointment. You may enrol yourself, but if you are prevented from coming in in person, you may authorise someone else to do it for you but they need to be able to bring the required documents to the enrolment. If you authorise someone else, please make sure that the proper form is filled in by hand and using blue ink. The venue for the personal enrolment: Room 115, first floor, 23-27 Kazinczy street, Budapest 1075, Hungary. You must bring along the following documents:
- passport (original)
- MA diploma (both the original and a copy!)
- proof of language proficiency (both the original and a copy!)
- if any of the documents are in a language other than English or Hungarian, you must also bring an official translation and a copy of the official translation
