About the lecture:

Among psychiatric disorders, considerable controversy has surrounded behavioral addictions. Studies of problematic gambling, gaming, and sexual behaviors have suggested similarities with substance-use disorders in multiple domains (phenomenological, clinical, neurobiological, genetic and others). Such findings have important implications for how disorders are classified and the prevention and treatment approaches tested and employed. In this presentation, recent findings relating to gambling, gaming, compulsive sexual behavior and other disorders will be presented in the setting of changes being made in the eleventh edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11).  Clinical implications relating to prevention and treatment will be discussed.

Prof. Marc N. Potenza is a Professor of Psychiatry, Child Study and Neuroscience at the Yale University School of Medicine where he is the Director of the Problem Gambling Clinic, the Center of Excellence in Gambling Research, and the Women and Addictive Disorders Core of Women's Health Research at Yale. He is on the editorial boards of fourteen journals and has received multiple national and international awards for excellence in research and clinical care. Dr. Potenza's research has focused on the neurobiology and treatment of substance and behavioral addictions and other disorders characterized by impaired impulse control and reward-related motivations. This work has also involved identifying potential intermediary phenotypes, like facets of impulsivity, that may in part explain the high rates of co-occurrence between psychiatric conditions and might represent novel targets for prevention and treatment strategies.
