Mentoring is associated with benefits for mentors and mentees. Only recently have scholars attempted to understand better the behaviors and processes involved in mentoring relationships. In this talk, Dr. Lunsford will discuss her contributions to opening the ‘black box’ of mentoring by sharing her research on the key behaviors of mentoring, how mentoring practices are learned, and the role of mentorship education.

Laura Gail Lunsford is a professor of psychology and assistant dean at Campbell University. A U.S. Fulbright Scholar (Germany), she has published over 50 articles, chapters, and books on mentoring and leadership. Her recent book on mentoring programs, The Mentor’s Guide: Five Steps to Build a Successful Mentor Program, is in its 2nd edition. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the Luce Foundation, Institute for Education Sciences, and the Department of Education. The International Mentoring Association recognized her with the Hope Dissertation Award and she now serves on their board. She has worked in senior administrative roles at the University of NC, Wilmington, Duke University and NC State University. She was a tenured associate professor at the University of Arizona. Her BA and PhD are from NC State; her MS is from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
