ELTE maintains its leading position in Hungarian higher education

According to the latest global ranking by U.S. News & World Report, Eötvös Loránd University is Hungary's best higher education institution in seven fields and based on overall results.

U.S. News & World Report published the results of its 2026/27 university world ranking on June 16, with the organization examining higher education institutions from 105 countries based on 13 indicators. This year, the ranking included the top 2,250 institutions based on the number of publications and conferences, global and regional research reputation, the proportion of international collaborations, and the number of publications among the top 10% and 1% most cited in a given field. Eight Hungarian higher education institutions made it onto the 2026/27 list; according to the evaluation, Eötvös Loránd University remains Hungary's leading training institution, and it secured the 507th place in the world ranking this year.

In Hungary, ELTE is followed in the ranking by Semmelweis University (546th), University of Szeged (891st), and University of Debrecen (904th). Óbuda University placed 1001st, University of Pécs 1332nd, Budapest University of Technology and Economics 1547th, and Szent István University 1734th.

Fields of Study

Alongside the overall ranking, U.S. News & World Report also assessed universities based on 51 narrower fields of study. Here, just as last year, ELTE appears among the best in 14 fields. In three of these (space science, physics, psychology), it ranked among the world’s top 200, and in seven, it holds the top spot among Hungarian universities. Among the world’s best, Harvard retained its top position this year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Stanford in third place. The top ten feature six American, three British, and one Chinese university.
