Idiopathic environmental intolerance attributed to electromagnetic fields

The focus of my research is idiopathic environmental intolerance attributed to electromagnetic fields (IEI-EMF), previously known as electromagnetic hypersensitivity. According to the definition of the World Health Organization, IEI-EMF means a condition burdened with non-specific symptoms, during which the affected persons attribute their symptoms to electromagnetic exposure, operating electrical equipment, or experience it near them. Currently, there is no diagnostic criterion available to define the condition, it is not a medical category, and since the relationship between symptoms and exposure has not been supported by scientific studies, the phenomenon has been classified as one of the broader idiopathic environmental intolerances. The condition is characterized by a high degree of distress, often leading to social isolation and loss of work ability. Theories related to the etiology of electrosensitivity represent two main directions: while according to the toxicogenic approach, the symptoms are caused by toxicodynamic processes activated by electromagnetic fields, the authors promoting the psychogenic theory explain the phenomenon of symptom formation with psychological processes (for example, distorted attention and attributional processes, nocebo effect, associative learning ). Many researchers emphasize, however, that in order to fully understand the phenomenon, it is necessary to integrate the two approaches and to set up interdisciplinary research groups.
